The Segway PT is the latest thing in transport. The PT, or personal transporter, is similar to a bicycle, but it has got computers and motors in its base. It was the idea of Dean Kamen. He showed it to the world for the first time in December 2001.
The Segway is easy to operate and you don’t need a special licence. To move forwards, you simply lean forward and to go backwards, you lean back. To turn, you move the handlebar to the left or to the right. You can choose to go faster or slower; the slowest speed is 9kph and the maximum speed is 36 kph.
At the moment you can’t use the Segway on roads in most countries because people say that it’s dangerous. But policemen in Chicago use it when they are patrolling the city. Tourists can hire a segway to visit some places in Thailand, the USA and Europe. And Disney offers a Segway guided tour of its theme park in California.
