London’s full of exciting things to do, but if you want to get an impression of how Londoners live, visit one of its markets. Here’s a small selection.

PORTOBELLO ROAD
This famous market was the location for the popular film Notting Hill. On Saturdays the market sells antiques, jewellery, clothes and souvenirs. A section in the middle sells fruit and vegetables every day of the week. It’s quite touristy and can get crowded, but it’s always lively.

COVENT GARDEN
The name Covent Garden comes from the Middle Ages, when the Convent of St. Peter maintained a large vegetable garden. The original market sold fruit and vegetables, but today it only sells crafts, jewellery and clothes six days a week, and antiques on Mondays. A lot of people come for its atmosphere, with cafes, restaurants and performances by buskers and other street artists.

BOROUGH MARKET
Although it’s less famous than Portobello Road and Covent Garden, it has the longest history, and is one of the country’s largest food markets. Open on Friday and Saturday, you can buy food from around the world. It’s also famous for its beautiful Victorian architecture, and was a location for the third Harry Potter film.
