Until the age of 33 Sara Campbell had never heard of free diving, a form of diving that doesn’t rely on any breathing equipment. She was living on a Sinai beach and teaching yoga after she had fled the pressures of life in London. A pupil, noticing how long Sara could hold her breath during meditation, recognised that she might have a gift for free diving and urged her to try it. Sara had absolutely no diving background, but eventually she agreed and immediately began to excel. Within a year she had broken three world records. Her accomplishments in a sport which requires great strength are even more incredible considering her size: she is less than 1.5 metres tall, a fact which has earned her the nickname Mighty Mouse. Free diving is one of the world’s most dangerous sports, but Sara claims that it’s more relaxing than meditation. The underwater silence and the stunning scenery keep her going down for more.
