‘Read Receipts’ Such as Whatsapp’s ‘Blue Double Tick’ Can Destroy Your Life

OPEN STRAIGHT FORWARD MESSAGE INAPPROPRIATE READ UNWILLING IMMEDIATELY START IGNORE 2.0 TIME PERSONAL LAST

Most platforms tell you ___ your message has been ___. On WhatsApp the double ___ turns blue. It sounds ___ enough, but when a ___ lingers on “seen” without ___ reply for anything beyond ___ few minutes, you think ___’ve been ignored. It’s enough ___ make you feel depressed.

___ what you said so ___? You thought not, but ___ were obviously wrong, because ___ else would they have ___ it and not replied? ___ works both ways too: ___ you’ve read a message ___ you’re either unable or ___ to respond to it ___, the countdown has already ___. The implicit message of ___ silence is that you’re ___ them - not the best ___ point for a conversation.
___ anxiety of not getting ___ reply is silly, but ___ is real and unique ___ this time, the web ___, when everyone is assumed ___ be available at all ___. And, if not, it’s ___. Combined with notifications for “___ active” (which tell you how long since someone was on the platform) and “is typing” (which tell you when they’ve started typing their reply), well, is it any wonder that anxiety is so common among the young nowadays?

Communication has gone downhill even though it’s ostensibly improved. When we’re used to good things happening instantly, time taken to type a reply is considered a bad thing. Personally, I want “read receipts” abolished. Ignorance (of the exact moment you read my message and decided not to reply to it) is wonderful.
