One of its greatest achievements is a 10-acre nature reserve in Patna. They planted hundreds of types of trees there. In 2010 the state government started cutting down trees near the Patna airport. Schoolgirls carrying “Save the Trees” posters demonstrated to prevent this action. As a result, the government stopped cutting down the trees. If Tarumitra succeeds, it will also change the way people in India celebrate the Holi Festival. Every spring people celebrate this festival by lighting big fires with branches from trees. In Patna, they burn rubbish instead of trees and now in some other areas too. If these volunteers didn’t do such good work, Patna wouldn’t be a model for other cities in India. Today Tarumitra has got members in over 1,000 schools and colleges all over India.
