The Past Perfect - Review

414 [80 words each]     POINTS: Speed-boat struck buoy - Both men - thrown water - It moved off. Men - swam shore - Turn Circle - towards them - Just missed them. Swam - out of danger - Boat returned. Lost speed - all Petrol used up - floated gently.


414.1   1. The moment ... , ... into the water. 2. As the boat ... , ... . 3. Turning ... , ... . 4. After just ... , the two men swam on until ... 5. When ... , ... speed. 6. Soon ... and ... across the water.

414.2   1. Because ... 2. ... and while ... and only just ... 3. ... no sooner ... than ... 4. This time, however, ... because ... and ...

414.1 - The moment (that) the speed-boat struck a buoy, both men were thrown into the water. As the boat moved off, the men swam to the shore. Turning in a circle, it was coming towards them. After just missing them, the two men swam on until they were out of danger. When the boat returned, it had lost speed. Soon all the petrol was used up and the boat floated gently across the water.

414.2 - Because the speed-boat had struck a buoy, both men were thrown into the water. The boat moved off and while the men were swimming towards the shore, the boat turned in a circle and only just missed them. The men had no sooner swam out of danger than the boat returned. This time, however, it had lost speed because all the petrol had been used up and the boat floated gently across the water.
