408.1 The Crystal Palace, which was built for the Great Exhibition in London, was different from other buildings because it was made of iron and glass. Goods as well as machinery was (were) sent from all over the world. So many visitors arrived by boat and by train that it was possible to build colleges and museums from the profits. After the exhibition it moved to South London where it remained until it burned down in 1936.
