316 (dated) - In 1858 Aimé Thomé de Gamond planned to build a tunnel across the English Channel, which would be ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea-level. Two years later William Low suggested a better plan. Passing trains in his proposed double-railway tunnel would solve the problem of ventilation because they would draw in fresh air behind them. Though work began, it was stopped because the British feared invasion. However, there has been renewed interest in the idea lately. (dated)
